The Race for Water weighed anchor once more in April 2017, with an ambitious goal: to demonstrate the propulsion system for freighters of the future. Between 2010 and 2012, the vessel outfitted by the foundation of the same name succeeded in travelling around the world using solar propulsion alone. Five years later, the demonstrator has expanded its energy range by adding hydrogen and wind energy to its existing photovoltaic system. A kite generates wind energy and surplus solar energy produces hydrogen for use during periods when the batteries are depleted.
