A wind-propulsion cargo ship to help decarbonise marine transport

On 21 August 2023, the world’s first wind-propulsion bulk carrier ship set sail on its six-week maiden voyage. Chartered by the agribusiness giant Cargill, the 229-metre Pyxis Ocean is equipped with two WindWings, which are effectively large rigid sails. This system developed by BAR Technologies should generate fuel savings of up to 30 percent and help reduce the carbon impact of marine transport, a sector responsible for almost 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
