Solar energy could one day be captured in space, where it is not dissipated by the atmosphere, then transformed into electricity and transmitted to Earth as radio waves. The aim of the European Space Agency’s SOLARIS initiative is to test the feasibility of space-based solar power plants. While their technical feasibility has already been established, questions remain about how to scale up and finance this approach, in an already congested space traffic environment.
