What do cancer, obesity, mental illness and heart and lung disease have in common? They are lifestyle diseases, related to the way we live in cities, says the La Fabrique de la cité think tank which is looking into how cities can “generate health”. To achieve this, they need to work on their morphology and redevelop public spaces, invent new forms of architecture and reconsider the way in which infrastructure is built. In short, it’s by rethinking the environment that cities can “offset the potentially pathogenic effects of city life”.
