In recent years, investment in fossil energy sources has trended downward while investment in renewable energy sources has increased. There is, however, no reason to assume that the trend will continue over the long term or that the proportional decline in oil and oil derivatives will suffice to slow the increase in global temperatures. Democratisation of carbon-free energy resources and notably renewables would appear more than ever necessary to combat global warming. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) confirms this imperative and makes the case for developing renewables in order to improve the carbon footprint of the international community and to boost global economic development.
