Public lighting, once a symbol of progress, is now a hot topic for communities. The issues up for debate include energy consumption, respect for biodiversity, security and innovation. Some towns are trialling partial switch-offs, others are looking into smart light fixtures. But opinion is divided.

Looking for a new way to think about lighting, La Fabrique de la Cité has published an essay based on work by researcher Marianne Laloy Borgna, entitled (in French) “Is public lighting the next democratic issue facing the ecological transition?” By means of various examples and expert opinions, this text examines the different uses of light in towns and cities and explores the changes needed to meet the imperatives of ecological transition and energy frugality.
