In the United States, a dozen or so companies are backing computer-controlled airborne wind power to provide the future with electricity. This technology could make it possible to build wind farms in areas not windy enough for conventional turbines. Flying more than 200 metres above the ground, the kites convert wind energy into electricity via a generator below, producing enough energy to power 60 homes.
