Climate change has considerably amplified natural risks, and floods in particular. To mitigate these risks, public authorities are increasingly resorting to nature-based solutions (NbS). Unlike traditional civil engineering solutions, these tap into the functionality and complexity of natural processes to restore aquatic environments, improving their ecosystems in hydrological, geomorphological and ecological terms. NbS have a positive public image, allowing them to attract finance more readily than with civil engineering approaches.
