In the US, sewage and gas lines are subject to strict maintenance rules, which is not the case for drinking water lines. Dealing with multiple leaks and replacing pipes when not always necessary, due to a lack of visibility, is costing cities a fortune. The company HiBot has developed a solution that combines artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data to retrieve data from inside pipes, then process it and use it to work out which segments of the network need to be replaced. The technology promises to generate savings of half a trillion dollars.
