Eminent scientists involved in artificial intelligence research say that algorithms can help us combat the effects of climate change. The report they have published lists the areas in which machine learning can help “save humanity from imminent peril”. The MIT Technology Review has listed ten “high leverage” recommendations, including predicting electricity requirements, discovering new materials, optimising freight routing, lowering barriers to electric-vehicle adoption, making buildings more efficient, optimising supply chains, making precision agriculture possible at scale, tracking deforestation, and nudging consumers to change their shopping habits.
