Demographic pressures, pollution and droughts are putting freshwater systems under strain. Faced with the threat of water shortage, cities are taking a range of measures from technical innovation to ecosystem restoration. Three main response categories are available to them: the first is technical and aims to optimise water management, storage and supply; the second is ecosystem-based and involves rethinking the role water plays in cities; and the third relates to behaviours, particularly in terms of water sustainability.
