In a recent report, the IEA (International Energy Agency, an organisation founded by the OECD) expects offshore wind turbine production to grow exponentially over the coming two decades. The report’s authors consider that offshore wind energy is still in its infancy and could well become the largest source of electricity generation over the coming 20 years. Driven by supportive government policies, technological progress and falling costs, global offshore wind capacity may increase 15-fold by 2040. Offshore wind power could thus become the cornerstone of the world energy system and constitute the solution to the global warming issue.
